DESCRIPTION

Not seen at auction since 1982

William Harrison Ainsworth (4 February 1805 – 3 January 1882) was an English historical novelist born in Manchester.

Ainsworth briefly tried the publishing business, but soon gave it up and devoted himself to journalism and literature. His first success as a writer came with Rookwood in 1834, which features Dick Turpin as its leading character. A stream of 39 novels followed, the last of which appeared in 1881.

Complete in three volumes.


CONDITION

In a brown cloth binding with black stamped decoration to the front board. Black stamped border to the boards. Gilt decoration and title to the spine. Externally generally smart with slight rubbing to the boards and spine. Bumping and rubbing to the head and tail of spine and extremities. Small splits to the head and tail of spine. Small loss to the head of vol I and II. Sunning to the spine of vol II. Rubbing to the front and rear joints. Hinges tender, with two held by cords only. Internally, bindings strained. Pages generally bright and clean. Occasional handling marks. Occasional spotting throughout, heavier to the first and last few pages.
