THE KIT

2kg top quality casting clay / sand

THE FLASK:

Aluminium, interlocking casting rings with “lock and key” to ensure perfect alignment - every time. There are internal indentations to ensure the clay does not simply slide out when the filled flask is moved.

The tubular flasks are able to maintain their shape during the necessary heavy compaction of the sand / clay which is required when using the Delft technique with Petrobond / Delft style sand. Rectangular frames tend to distort (cast iron frames may even snap) under heavy loading causing the moulded sand to collapse during separation when removing the impressed pattern piece prior to pouring.

This set includes a 25mm hole drilled in the side to allow the option of pouring the molten metal either from the side or from the top.

I use 10swg aluminium tube with a wall thickness of 1/8”. This gauge is sturdy enough for the clay to be hammered and the flask retain it’s integrity and yet thin enough to dissipate the heat generated by the casting process.

THE CLAY:

2kg of high quality, fine grade impression casting clay. Impression casting is also known as the "Delft technique".

This clay is a top quality casting sand and oil mix that uses a very fine grade of sand. Due to this fine grade the finished article will replicate greater detail but the clay needs to be THOROUGHLY compressed / hammered otherwise it will collapse on removal of the original piece. I use talcum on the piece (and the insides of the prepared clay in the ring) to help with release.

The clay is brand new and manufactured to ISO9001 UK specification to ensure the quality of the clay and safety of the user.

The clay is not claimed to be a brand name and then sold in plain packaging, nor is it a homemade concoction or reclaimed from foundry use and sold as new.

I buy in bulk, vacuum pack and sell at a low profit to ensure a quick turnover of stock ensuring the clay is competitively priced, free from contaminates AND fresh!!!

I DO NOT sell the brand name "Delft" AT ALL - the products I sell are suitable for the Delft technique method of casting, but are not made by the company "Delft" nor in the region of "Delft" in the Netherlands - and I do not, have not and will not claim that they are.

The clay I sell has a finer grain and therefore reproduces finer detail than the brand name. It requires a very thorough packing and careful removal of the impressed object to ensure the mould edges do not crumble. There is no substitute for professional tuition although there are YouTube videos that should give reasonable pointers in the direction of producing castings.

If you are new to casting then please be patient and aware that it is a skill that requires practice, patience and learning from previous failures. Simply buying a casting kit doesn't mean you can produce technically perfect casts just as buying a cement mixer doesn't necessarily mean you can build a wall!

The Delft method is not always suitable for the items to be cast. Check out "lost-wax" or "simple impression casting".

The keyword box / title may contain reference to flask, clay, gold and silver (etc.) - just to be clear, you will only be getting what is described in the body of the listing.

All of the flasks are made to order by me on my non-CNC lathe. Each of the mating surfaces are trimmed down to a tolerance of 15/100ths mm of each other in diameter to ensure a perfect fit. Because each flask is hand crafted, it is unique. Swapping tops and bottoms between sets is unlikely to produce a satisfactory mating.

Within reason the flasks can be made to whatever specification you require - please let me know.
