English

In december 1940 Ernst van 't Hoff (1908-1955), a Dutch pianist, formed a modern dance band which is now considered to be one of the best Dutch big bands which played in the Netherlands during the Nazi occupation (1940-1945). This band was 'dienstverplfichtet', which meant they had to work for the German Reichskulturkammer and couldn't refuse working in Germany when demanded. From 1941 until 1944 the band made several excellent commercial recordings in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

On July 1 st 1943 Dr. Goebbels, the German minister of Propaganda, ordered to put the Dutch Radio station Hilversum II directly under the supervision of the German ‘Reichsrundfunkgesellschaft’ (R.G.G.). Hilversum II then became Calais II and was part of a chain called Deutsche Europasender (D.E.S.).

These radio stations provided Nazi-propaganda aimed at England and broadcast the music of the most advanced Dutch orchestras such as The Ramblers , Het Utrechts Stedelijk Orkest , Frans Wouters, Ernst van 't Hoff and Dick Willebrandts radio-orkest .

The German Propaganda swing band ‘Charlie and his Orchestra’, which also included some Dutch musicians, used very clear political propaganda texts. This was not the case with the Dutch bands working for D.E.S.

For D.E.S. ' Ernst van 't Hoff en zijn solisten ' could freely record songs in the American and British style. Their singers Maria Zamora, Lammy van den Hout, Jenny Even and Harry van der Kruk could sing in English. All this was officially forbidden when they performed in public.

Ernst van 't Hoff could use the best Dutch and Belgium swing musicians of that day. It paid well, they could play swing music but The Ernst van ‘t Hoff Orchestra , had the disadvantage that they also had to performe in nazi Germany. They became very popular among youngsters there and were admired by the German musicians of the day. But they also got into trouble with nazi authorities. In 1942 the Dutch nazi-controlled radio 'De Nederlandsche Omroep', hired a second swing orchestra under contract of the Dutch Decca record company. This new band was always available as they didn't have to work in Germany. That's how the 'Dick Willebrandts radio-orkest' was born. The result was that half of the best musicians of Ernst van 't Hoff left the band and joined the orchestra of Dick Willebrandts. They didn't want to work in Germany anymore. So Ernst van 't Hoff had to start all over again and managed to build a new impressive orchestra, despite the fact that he had lost some of his best soloists, he managed to keep his original arrangers. The band played jazz standards of Count Basie, Fats Waller and others in a Glenn Miller/ Artie Shaw mode. They did this very professionally although they couldn't play these numbers in public because this music was considered 'entarttet' and in public the singers couldn't sing in English. After the war many of the Ernst van 't Hoff muscians played an important part in the postwar bands in the Netherlands. In Germany the van 't Hoff band and the Belgian Band of Fud Candrix are considered the best bands of the wartime and were very influential for the German jazz musicians, who were isolated and restricted in their work during the war.

The recordings on this cd were considered lost but were recently discovered after nearly 80 years. We are now able to hear the 1943 version of this impressive band. The recordings are carefully restored by Harry Coster and fill in an important piece of Dutch and European jazz history of the best Dutch bigband during the wartime.
