The Cape Bird Club leadership presented Rondevlei as an ‘ornithological field station’ and picked Ernest Middlemiss as their first ‘permanent watcher’ over the vlei. He served as the first warden at Rondevlei from 1952 to 1975. Middlemiss was editor of the journal ‘Bokmakierie’ for some years and wrote scientific articles and letters to, for example, the journal ‘Nature’. In one letter he highlighted difference in eye colour between male and female Southern Pochards. In 1946 Middlemiss wrote “Cape Country – informal sketches in word and pictures of the natural environment of the Cape Peninsula“. Lance Van Sittert described the English born Middlemiss as ‘a forgotten figure in the annals of amateur and professional ornithology, as a self-taught naturalist, artist, journalist and minor literary figure’ who epitomized the then current view of so-called ‘fortress conservation’ in which protected areas were fenced and defended against outside influences and the local population. Fortress conservation prevailed under Middlemiss who defended the vlei against poachers, woodcutters, trespass and even visitors with fences, patrols, dogs and observation towers. Howard Langley, who replaced Middlemiss in 1975, spent six months in 1975 sharing his Rondevlei office, during which time he regaled Howard with many stories. Howard remembers him as “a journalist by trade, he was rather eccentric and believed very much in allowing nature to take its course with minimal interference. As a result, during his tenure, the reserve became very overgrown with invasive acacias, while the vlei’s margins disappeared under dense swathes of Paspalum vaginatum, an invasive grass from South America. Although he was responsible for the establishment of the museum and built the two observation towers for counting birds (not for public use) … he did everything possible to minimise public usage of the reserve”. Peter Steyn wrote: “I knew Ernest Middlemiss well and he was very kind to me while I was still a schoolboy. He was quite a crusty character but took a shine to me, even putting one of my photographs on the cover of ‘Bokmakierie’ magazine, which he edited, while I was still a schoolboy. This was a milestone in my early photography career. I used to help him ring egrets in the extensive reed beds. I think enigmatic sums him up well!” ‘Fortress conservation’ prevailed until Howard Langley was appointed manager at Rondevlei. What followed was a major change in the style of nature conservation management. The Ernst Middlemiss bird hide was built in 1990. Will ship by Royal Mail 1st Class Signed for, well packaged.
