The stuff of dreams... A very rare, very late f1.2 FD, compatible with FL, FD and many mirrorless bodies on an adapter!

So rare as to be almost mythical, this insanely fast lens is perhaps the ultimate vintage Canon prime, offered here in simply excellent condition.  The serial number dates this lens to September 1987, making it one of the very last FD lenses ever manufactured.

With the exception of a few very exotic and hideously expensive rangefinder lenses, 1.2 is the fastest speed ever offered in the 'Normal' focal length range, this level of speed calls for huge expanses of precision engineered and horrendously expensive, high quality glass, housed in an equally precise, massive barrel to give the professional press photographer a tool used with high ISO film and specialist developing techniques to capture the most fleeting of moments in the lowest of light.  You know the classic high key black and white shots of grand Prix cars and drivers from the 1960s and 70s?  All were captured on lenses like this or the equivalent Nikon.

This is truly a Professional lens, and came with a staggering price tag, so very few were sold worldwide and those that were have mostly long since been worked to death earning their living.  I have been told that the new price for this lens was the equivalent of £4500 and even then Canon sold it at a loss as a prestige product.  Which makes the current Canon 50mm 1.2 look exceptional value with a UK RRP of just over 2000GBP.  For that sort of investment, kit is expected to earn it's keep, all the more amazing then that this lens survives in such amazing condition.

Of course high ISO is no longer the reserve of the pros, it is something offered by any decent digital body, while digital darkroom tricks can breathe life back into the ropiest of photos, but the fundamental rule remains as ever it was, the more light you get though the lens, the better your resulting image will be. Fortunately, this stunning lens can be happily mounted on various modern digital bodies for the ultimate marriage of capability and convenience.  In addition to raw speed, the FD 50/1.2 is famous for the magical bokeh created by it's eight bladed aperture.  It is wonderful to mount this lens on my Olympus OMD-EM5, on which it has an effective focal length of 100mm, and to have in your hands an f1.2 portrait/short telephoto, something which if it has ever been offered, you or I could neither afford or lift.

The FD mount succeeded the FL, with which it is compatible, in 1971.  The famed 'breech ring' design ran until 1979, when it was succeeded by the 'New FD' range, who's lenses are lighter and easier to mount, which ran until the introduction of the EF mount in 1984, Production ceasing between 1985 and 1987, making this lovely lens one of the very last FD's of any type to be made.  FL and FD lenses and bodies are interchangeable, so this particular lens should mount on any camera which will take an FD or FL lens or for which there is and FD adapter available, as you can see below, I have mounted it on my son's Panasonic G1 with an micro four thirds adapter without problems.  Other adapters are available for Canon EOS, Samsung NX and Sony NEX bodies.

This particular example of this legendary FD design is in simply exceptional condition, having obviously lived its life as a little used pride and joy.  The massive optics are sparkling and unmarked.  There is not even any dust that I can make out when holding the lens up to the daylight.  There is NO sign of fungus or oil at all.

Aperture control is from F1.2 to F16 and is as snappy and responsive as you could wish and clicks sweetly into each half stop.  Focusing is smooth and well damped.

The trademark black Canon finish is in sublime condition, with no dings, scratches or other wear in sight.  All the lettering and numerals are very clean and clear.  I would have expected an elite professional grade lens such as this to have had a very hard life, but this one seems practically untouched by the passage of the past 35 years.

I have been playing with this lens both on my PEN F and my son's Panasonic G6, which is seen modelling it in the photos, and it has performed staggeringly well on both, as with other vintage lenses, these vintage Canon offerings have a unique fingerprint which defies description, in my experience, they are among the very sharpest lenses you will find.

As for this lens, I was expecting shots at 1.2 to be fairly soft, but this example is actually surprisingly sharp, with the lens pin sharp when stopped down a little.  This is hangover from Canon's rangefinders designs, which inherited the Leica design priorities, aiming to offer sharpest performance at the widest aperture.

This beautiful lens is supplied together with it's original front and rear Canon caps, and its original Canon carrying case ready for you to get to work!

So there you have it, a high quality and highly specced, must have vintage Canon prime, which as you can see is in exceptional near mint condition despite its 35 years.

I would love to keep it, but as I am frankly not as good photographer as this is a lens I would not be able to stretch its legs, which would be sad given the fact that it ha obviously waited all it's life to see some serious action in more capable hands.

Of course equipment of this condition and rarity takes us deep into the collectors realm, so it is likely that you could buy this lens and when you or your children come to sell it on, see a return equal to or greater than the amount you paid for it here, don't you just love photography?

Hopefully, the description and photos will answer any questions you may have, but please feel free to drop me an email if anything needs clarifying further.
