About the book >.>.> Lace is an openwork, ornamental fab- ric, made by looping, tying, or twisting a yarn upon itself. Cotton, silk, wool, ray- on, linen, nylon, and other man-made fi- bres are all used in making laces today. Artistic lace, with designs of flowers, figures and scrolls upon a cobweb of threads, was first made in the 16th cen- tury. It reached perfection in the 17th and 18th centuries. There were two fun- damental systems of making lace by hand: needlepoint, and the bobbin or pil- low method. When needlepoint was de- veloped in Venice in the 16th century by the use of the needle alone without the use of a fabric base, it was called Pun- to in Aria (stitches in the air). At more or less the same time, the bobbin meth- od was invented and initially made pop- ular in Flanders and Northern France. It made use of pins and bobbins worked over a cushion to create the lace. The exquisite handiwork of both these basic types has been successfully duplicated by the modern machine. During the Renaissance, the quick- ly spreading handmade lace industry was so valuable that common Vene- tians were not allowed to wear lace; it was all sold abroad for massive profits. The French, meanwhile, actively devel- oped their own lace industry, and Italian lace workers were enticed to come to France and teach the art of lace-making to workers in Alenon and other towns. The industry spread throughout Europe. with each community seeking to estab lish its own identity (SP)
