Ramon Reig i Corominas 1903 – 1963

Spanish painter, especially of landscapes in watercolours.

The architect, painter and teacher, Ramon Reig i Corominas was born in Manila on 4th November 1903. A few months later his family returned to Figueres, where his parents, Carles Reig and Maria Neus Corominas, were originally from, having temporarily moved to the Philippines for work reasons. He studied at the Liceo Monturiol in Figueres and completed his baccalaureate at the Ramon Muntaner High School in the same city. At this time, when his father died, he combined his baccalaureate with classes at the Municipal School of Drawing.

Here he befriended Salvador Dalí, Jaume Miravitlles, Joan Xirau and Joan Turró with whom he edited, from January to June 1919, the monthly arts magazine "Stadium". With this group of friends he went out to paint landscapes around Figueres, especially in Vilabertran, where his family had a house. From 1920 he studied under the painter Joan Núñez Fernández who had just obtained a teaching position at the Institut Ramon Muntaner and with whom he improved his technique of drawing and painting, together with his friends Salvador Dalí, Marià Baig, Joaquim Bech de Careda and Josep Bonaterra.

After completing his studies, he moved to Barcelona to study at the School of Architecture and, simultaneously, to the School of Fine Arts, under the direction of the teacher Feliu Mestres Borrell. During his years of study in Barcelona he participated in group exhibitions at the Galeries Dalmau. In 1918 he participated, in Figueres, in the Exhibition of Artists Empordanesos together with Bonaterra, Llavaneras and Monturil. In 1922 he was awarded in the exhibition of the Catalan Association of Students and in 1929 he participated in the Exhibition of National and Foreign Modern Art.

In 1932 he obtained a teaching position in the chair of drawing at the Institute of Burgos. That same year he was selected for the Catalan painting section of the Brooklyn Museum in New York. A year later, in 1933, he requested a transfer to Figueres and joined the cloister of the Ramon Muntaner Institute, where he had been a student and two years later, in 1935, he held his first solo exhibition in Barcelona. In 1936 he married Maria Cinta Lloveras Sabater, but nine months later his wife and daughter died in childbirth.

In 1936, at the outbreak of the Civil War, he moved to San Sebastián where he served an illustrator in newspapers and magazines. In 1940, after the war, he married Maria Josefa Carbonell Moner, with whom he had two children, Maria Blanca and Carles. In 1940 he settled permanently in Figueres where he continued teaching as director of the Ramón Muntaner Institute, teaching at the School of Arts and Crafts and taking private classes in his studio. In 1940 he painted the murals of the old Chapel of the Hospital de Girona and the altar of the Sacred Heart of the Parish of Sant Pere de Figueres.

In 1942 he was selected to participate in the Spanish art exhibition held in London and was awarded at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona, and a year later, in 1943 he painted the mural of the church of Arenys d'Empordà. In 1944, he was awarded the National Watercolour Prize at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Barcelona, the same year that he was named honorary partner of the Association of Watercolours of Catalonia and corresponding member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Toledo. A year later, in 1945, he exhibited in London.

In 1946 he was one of the main promoters of the Museu de l'Empordà in Figueres and in 1947 he was appointed technical manager, a position he held until 1963. In 1947 he participated in the creation of the Institut d'Estudis Empordanesos. He was also a member of the Restoration Board of Santa Maria de Vilabertran, the Restoration Board of Sant Pere de Rodes and the Girona Monuments Commission.

In 1954, together with Eduard Rodeja, he published the book "La acuarela en España" and painted the mural of the Church of Pertús. A year later, in 1955, he left the management of the Institut Ramon Muntaner in Figueres to paint full time, with a preference for watercolour, and exhibited his work in New York, London and Seville, Figueres, Barcelona, Burgos, Madrid, Bilbao, Girona and Paris. In 1957 he was appointed academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Sant Jordi in Barcelona and a year later, in 1958 he exhibited at the Grande Galerie in Paris. In 1959, he was elected corresponding academician of the Real Academia de San Femando in Madrid and in 1961 published the book "La Costa Brava vista per his best painters".

Ramón Reig i Corominas died prematurely in Figueres on 2nd December 1963, when he had just turned sixty.

From the Collection of the late Juan and Adriana Ferrer. Juan Ferrer, a well-known businessman and bon viveur and his sister Adriana, who was a librarian and keeper of their house, lived in the idyllic Catalonian city of Girona. Their collection comprised family heirlooms and a host of fascinating items from Africa, the Far East as well as Europe and Spain collected by Juan on frequent travels around the world. The collection was housed in his ‘museum’, a dedicated floor in their apartment in the Barri Vell district of Girona, which he delighted in sharing with family and friends.
