This painting belongs to a series of Stubbs’ work produced for wealthy aristocratic patrons, commissioned as accurate portraits of race horses. Stubbs’ anatomical studies of horses, resulting in his publication 'The Anatomy of the Horse', greatly aided his highly naturalistic depictions. ' Mares and Foals under an Oak Tree' was created in 1775 in Romanticism style.
A Colt and Two Chestnut Horses
This painting also belongs to a series of Stubbs’ work produced for wealthy aristocratic patrons, commissioned as accurate portraits of race horses. Stubbs’ anatomical studies of horses, resulting in his publication 'The Anatomy of the Horse', greatly aided his highly naturalistic depictions. ' A Colt (Gnawpost) and Two Chestnut Horses' is a difficult to find print belonging to a group of paintings produced around 1793. 'Gnawpost' was a colt owned by Jenison Shafto, the colt's name derived from his habit, depicted in the print by Stubbs, of twisting his head to gnaw at trees and fence-posts.
