JOAN BAEZ

“JOAN BAEZ” (First album)

(with FRED HELLERMAN as second guitar)

MEGARARE and Hard-To-Find original very first MONO press released, made and distributed in Chile by Salón Musical, licensed from Argentinian Serie from repertoire Vanguard by Dimensión Musical (D.M Records), catalog number 70.041, with machine etched matrix numbers BA 7041 1 1S in Side 1 and BA 7041 2 1S in Side 2, with black/silver D.M Records labels and blue “D.M”. Yes, Sirs, ANOTHER FIND from Chile!!!

“JOAN BAEZ” was originally released in 1960 and it seems we had to wait a long time to see her debut album released in Chile, no year informed in cover or labels, but for sure this album was released late 60’s in Chile and, like in most of the cases of that period, we got it with an UNIQUE COVER made of a single piece of thin cardboard folded in the middle faking a gatefold cover, with two sheets of paper for front and back covers attached to the cardboard, partially glued in the mouth edge, so 3 sides are open and kept together for a plastic bag. Front cover keeps strictly the original artwork, with the only difference that in Chile the Vanguard Records logo is boxed and placed at bottom right corner, with “Mid-Line” logo omitted. Back cover also keeps the original US design, but the liner notes by Maynard Solomon are translated to Spanish and only reduced to the tracklist, with the lyrics of “El Preso Número Nueve” omitted, additional notes by Emilio A. Stevanovitch, about Joan Baez and her career, informing since 1963 she’s identified as part active in the protest movements and “Program” is omitted in Chile. The songs are listed in English only, with timing of each song. In labels the songs are written in Spanish only, with the only exception of “Little Moses”, which’s written in English only, with credits for songwriters of each song (well, most of them only say “Motivo Popular”, a popular song with no songwriter known). It’s interesting to see that in back cover all songs titles are written in English and sides are identified as “Faz 1” and “Faz 2”. So, here you have the chance to get and own this debut album by Joan Baez released in Chile with UNIQUE COVER and in great condition, A MUST TO HAVE for all fans, lovers and collectors of Joan Baez and/or Folk Rock music!!! WOW!!!

The cover was already described and it’s in great EX or EX+ condition, clean and clear, no ring marks, no blemishes, minimal wear in edges, more evident in corners, and age browning in the back cover, more evident in the mouth edge where the hands touched more the cover. The record is in superb EX+ or NM- condition both sides, glossy and clean, with only minimal scuffs hard to see at first sight, which don’t affect play at all. Labels on both sides are in NM- or NM condition, absolutely clean and clear, no marks of any kind, only some very light spindle hole wear. The sound is in VG or VG+ condition both sides, loud, clear and clean, with a light background noise (surface noise is normal in records from Chile), with soft constant crackles and some occasional pops here and there in parts, more evident in the silent parts and between tracks, which don’t cause major distraction from the loud and clear sound this record keeps from the beginning to the end. Overall, maybe this is not a record for Minty minds or audiophiles, it looks better than how it sounds, but considering the great cover, almost immaculate labels and still a very decent and respectable sound quality after about 50 or even more years, which won’t disappoint anyone. And keep in mind the UNIQUE COVER!!! Yes Sirs, what a FIND!!! Click on the pictures to enlarge and see the labels and cover in detail. WOW!!!

Bid with confidence and don’t wait until the last second because you could lose the chance to get a real collectable record from Chile (South America) in superb condition like this copy is. You know South American records aren’t easy to get in good conditions, so HAPPY BIDDING and don’t let this record to go away… you could never see a so good copy of this record again… if you are lucky enough to see even another copy again…

Thanks for watching and bidding, good luck and best regards from Chile

_________________________________________________________

We don’t use the generic “VG” most of South American sellers use to hide poor quality conditions or “NM” or “Mint” for records which aren’t even clean and sound less than a normal “VG” in professional standards. We use the Record Collector’s Grading System with a little modification: we don’t use MINT grade but for Sealed records and we can use a + or – to show a most professional accurate description.

MINT (M): I only use this grade for Sealed records.

NEAR MINT (NM): The record itself is in like new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality (only some very very very light hairlines caused for the record rubbing the sleeve). The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in like perfect condition. EXCELLENT (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality, maybe some surface marks which doesn’t affect play. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing. VERY GOOD (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable. GOOD (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc. FAIR (F): The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and/or defaced. POOR (P): The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.

BAD (B): The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection-filler.

FEEDBACK

We don’t have anything to hide and we know the buyers expect to receive feedback after to pay for the items they win. Most of sellers say to give feedback when buyers leave feedback first. But we know that’s not fair for buyers. So, we leave feedback immediately after to receive the payment, because we understand that’s the part that buyers must receive feedback for. And we expect to receive positive feedback from buyers who receive the records immediately after they have got the records.
