Why clean my engine?

Car manufacturers have gradually switched to direct injection (DI) over the past decade and for good reason. Spraying a precisely controlled amount of fuel directly into an engine?s combustion chambers results in improved efficiency and greater power density; exhaust emissions are reduced as well. In 2015, 45% of all petrol engines sold utilised direct injection technology, a number that has only risen in the face of increasingly stringent emissions regulations.

  Despite the obvious advantages, this technology isn?t perfect. One of the biggest problems with direct injection is that the fuel is no longer being sprayed into the ports and onto the back of the intake valves. This mist of fuel actually helped keep the intake ports clean by preventing carbon deposits from being able to adhere to the ports and valves.

  These deposits, if allowed to build up, can  cause turbulence in the inlet tract, and this turbulence causes the air/fuel mixture to be unevenly distributed. When ignited, the flame front can be erratic, leave unburned fuel and create hot spots in the combustion chamber. On a scan tool, the engine may show a loss in volumetric efficiency. In extreme cases the localised hotspots that form in the combustion chamber can cause physical engine damage!

  The symptoms of carbon build-up will usually manifest as;

·         Misfire codes, EML on dash.

·         Stumbling and suspicious fuel trim numbers.

·         Noticeable loss of power.

·         Poor throttle response.

·         Poor fuel economy.

·         Lumpy idle.

·         Difficulty starting.

  For owners of these cars, the carbon build-up problem means they must invest in additional maintenance semi-regularly to have the carbon cleaned from their engine. Until relatively recently this involved manually scrubbing the posts with brushes and cleaning agents or in extreme cases even removing the cylinder head to clean the deposits in a chemical bath, both time consuming and costly.

  The latest development and the process adopted by WBA and Enigma Motorsport utilises finely crushed walnut shell granules to shot blast the deposits from the ports and valves without having to remove the cylinder head. The walnut granules are gentle enough to not damage the soft aluminium construction of modern cylinder heads, but hard enough to remove all deposits, restoring  your engines performance and reducing fuel consumption.

The photos show before and after shots of inlet ports walnut blasted by us, and show the effectiveness of this technique. If you have a direct injection car that has done over 50,000 miles, you?re looking to extract the most performance from existing or upcoming modifications, or you're having problems with fuel economy or performance we would love to help fulfil your engines full potential .
