DESCRIPTION: An absolutely gorgeous and very large, specimen of Indonesian purple 'Grape Agate'. This really is a beautiful and sizeable piece as can be seen from the 1cm reference cube in some of the photographs. The specimen is a perfect, deep purple colour with gorgeous white variegations. There are no significant broken 'grapes' to spoil the aesthetic appeal. We think that apart from the wonderful deep purple colouration, the best feature of this grape agate is the unique and really unusual shape with the large 'bulb' of grapes on the top above the sloping base of varying texture and colour... just amazing.

Under direct sunlight or directional lighting, it sparkles magically. This piece is one of the best in our collection and really is really lovely quality. It's offered by us at a great price in view of its large size, rarity and colour quality. This specimen displays well from any side or orientation so you will never get tired of looking at the same perspective. It looks perfect no matter how you position it. A LITTLE INFORMATION ABOUT INDONESIAN 'GRAPE AGATE': Grape Agate is a relatively new find, 2017, from Indonesia. Although the common name is Grape Agate, these are really botryoidal purple chalcedony. Botryoidal means that round tiny sphere-shaped crystals that have naturally formed together. Chalcedony is not scientifically its own mineral species, but rather a form of Quartz in micro crystalline form. It is a form of silica, composed of very fine inter growths of quartz and moganite.

For most of time, chalcedony was thought to be a ‘fibrous’ variety of non crystalline quartz, but more recently, it was actually discovered to be a combination of quartz and another silicate mineral; moganite (a polymorph of quartz). Both quartz and moganite share the same silicon dioxide (SiO2) chemical composition, but they have varying crystal structures. Moganite is monoclinic, while traditional quartz belongs to the trigonal crystal system. Chalcedony forms with a hexagonal crystal structure.
