We have today a set of new filter capacitors which will fit your SX-1050 very nicely.  The originals in your 1050 are now 40 years old.  They may have begun to leak nasty stuff onto your bottom panel, but even if they haven’t, it is time they were replaced.  Replacing the filters is a stand alone job which can be done without the necessity of going over the whole unit.  These caps fit easily.  They are the same value and size as the original so they fit the clamps and the screw holes.  The only complication is that the terminal screws for the new ones are larger than the original so you must enlarge the holes in the connectors.  I do this with a drill with a stepped bit.  These caps, by themselves make the SX-1050 sound better.  Of course, it is true that by this time, the whole unit is in need of renewal.  I can do this for you, go to my eBay listing for diagnostic service to get started, but if you are too far away to ship it in, then keep an eye on this space as I will soon be offering a complete parts kit for 1050 restoration.  You can take that to your local technician and he will be armed with the “right stuff”.  Further information on filter cap replacement can be found below:

Vintage receivers need new filter capacitors.  Forty plus years is a long time for football players and capacitors.  Replacing them is more complex than you might suppose.  You cannot simply order new ones just like the old ones……they are not out there.  This means you must be clever and find new ones that will be good replacements for what you have.  To do this, you must address the issues of electrical value, physical fit, and termination.

Electrical Values:  The primary values to be concerned with are capacitance and working voltage.  Capacitance is expressed in microfarads, noted as mfd or Uf.   The exact same value mfd is just fine, and going moderately higher is also ok……not lower.  The voltage specification is much the same, it can be higher, but do not go lower.  So for example, let’s say you have an original capacitor that is 6,700 mfd @80v and you have found one that is 10,000@100v and the new one fits in there well.  Go for it, your bass response will be tighter and you will like the results.

Physical Fit:  Mostly, new capacitors are smaller than the originals.  What to do about that?  The rule of thumb is whatever scheme is used for the new mounting, it must be tidy and professional looking.  Don’t be one of these boobs that puts a small capacitor into a large clamp and fills the space with weather stripping.  (I hate that).  The best case is to use a clamp of the correct size, and when you are lucky, the screw holes will match up.  When you are not, you must drill new holes.  Second best is to epoxy the new caps into a handy location.  This isn't always easy.

Termination:  Some filter caps have screw terminals, some have leads of one sort or another.  You have to figure out your best option.  Replacing the old cap with a new one that is exactly the same is the best option.   It is not always possible.  Sometimes I find myself down at the hardware store buying ring terminals so I can install a cap with screw terminals in the place of one with leads….and vice versa.  Once again, make it look professional.

Finally,  nearly all electrolytic capacitors are polarized, they have a plus and a minus.  You must make darn sure that the correct polarity is observed.  Getting this reversed and plugging it in and turning it on will not be a pretty thing.  Beyond that, unless you are a hobbiest of some skill or have an aptitude for this sort of thing, don’t try to install the new filter capacitors yourself.  Take them to a local shop and have them do it.  In the very least, if you do it, have the local shop plug it into a variac and run it up slowly so you will know that you got it right.  So there you have it….replacing filter caps is simple…….er, well, not so much.  Good luck.
