They have done this by retarding the ignition timing to such an extent that the result is a lower performing engine. The S-TRE will eliminate this problem. The S-TRE alters the signal sent from the GPS to the ECU in turn the ECU then sends out un-restricted signals to the engine resulting in a higher performing motorcycle (full details below).
The S-TRE and how it works: Suzuki has limited the torque available through gears 1 to 4 up to 50% throttle. They have done this by retarding the ignition timing to such an extent that the result is a lower performing engine. The S-TRE will eliminate this problem. The S-TRE alters the signal sent from the GPS to the ECU in turn the ECU then sends out un-restricted signals to the engine resulting in a higher performing motorcycle S-TRE stands for "Smart Timing Retard Eliminator". When we speak of timing we are referring to at what point the ignition spark occurs, relative to the position of the piston. The optimum place for the spark of ignition to occur is just slightly before the piston hits top dead centre. If the timing is just right maximum torque will be provided from the firing of that piston. If the ignition is timed too early (a long time before top dead centre) then the fuel and air mixture is ignited while the piston is still travelling towards top dead centre therefore some energy produced is wasted fighting this upward momentum. If the spark takes place too late (any time after top dead centre) the piston is already travelling down therefore the fuel and air mixture is NOT fully compressed when the combustion occurs as a result there is less downwards force gained from the combustion (It produces less than maximal torque). Hence, the correct timing is crucial to maximize the efficiency of the combustion and accordingly torque produced. In the first 4 gears of your EFI motorcycle, Suzuki intentionally programmed the timing to produce less than maximum torque, presumably to protect the rider from the full power. However, this limits the power and smoothness of your bike up to 50% throttle in gears 1 through 4. The S-TRE (Smart Timing Retard Eliminator) overcomes this limitation providing a smoother more responsive throttle in gears 1, 2, 3 & 4. The S-TRE also recognises when neutral is selected as a result maintaing a smooth idle and not affecting the cold start fast idle feature.
