Genuine John Dewsbury Single Jointed Eggbutt Snaffle Bits with Flat Rings in Kangaroo metal (70% copper) .   The flat rings on these eggbutts are quite difficult to make well (particularly in our Kangaroo metal), however they do lay very nicely against your horse's cheek -- a must for those with horses with sensitive skin prone to chaffing and rubs.  These bits are exquisitely beautiful, perfectly balanced and superbly engineered -- as one would expect from a John Dewsbury bit (designed and engineered by our own MASTER loriner, of course!)...  They are the best quality single jointed eggbutt snaffle bits that it is possible to buy!

I've noticed that single jointed bits are a little scarce from any of the major bit companies these days -- I expect that is because they are so much more expensive and difficult to make!  Our master loriner tells me that contrary to current popular bit lore, a correctly fitted single jointed bit  does NOT have a nutcracker action -- however one that is too large for the horse's mouth always will.  Double jointed bits are much more forgiving in that respect -- although they still must be correctly sized in order to be properly balanced in your horse's mouth and function correctly!

I included a photo of all 7 together (sorry that I didn't get the uppertons and piersons lined up correctly -- our master loriner has chastised me for that) so that the quality, balance and the lovely proportional ring sizes for the different sizes of mouths can be clearly seen -- aren't they gorgeous?   These are all brand fire new.  These are the only sizes of new flat ring simple single jointed eggbutt snaffles that I possess.  I have a very few used ones that are not yet listed (though none at all in a 5", regretfully) -- contact me with your specific size requirement if you would prefer one of the used ones -- if I have it,  I will be happy to create a new listing for them upon request....

Of course, one of the benefits of having a bit made of semi-precious metal is the jewel-like luster (as someone reminded me not long ago) --  not only do horses like the Kangaroo metal they are made of, and salivate beautifully on them, but they look beautifully elegant as well -- like jewellery for your horse!  These bits came with an unconditional life-time guarantee (if you ran over one with your car, we would have sent you another one!).  John Dewsbury is the only manufacturer in the world EVER to offer such a guarantee on bits -- such was the utter confidence in the superb quality of our products!  When only the very best will do, genuine John Dewsbury & Sons of England is the obvious choice  -- the world's premier bit manufacturer for more than 175 years (from 1831-2007) -- hey-ho, everyone retires sometime...

These  lovely eggbutt  snaffle bits are legal for dressage according to FEI 2019 rules.

Offered for sale by the wife of the manufacturer (who is still alive and kicking and yes, still watching what is going on in the world of bitting -- albeit sometimes with horror), I am dispersing a rather large personal collection.  My husband laughs that reports of his demise are highly exaggerated!  For those that accuse me of hoarding -- well, of course I have, wouldn't you have if you could?  Such gorgeous bits should be treasured, as they are sadly irreplaceable!  However, now that I've finished bitting and starting my last homebred young horse, presently a 6 year-old (I have sincerely promised my darling current husband that she will be the last one), I am willing to part with the bits that I don't need for her (or my other two horses, retired, but still ridden).  Most of the bits in my collection are new and have never been in a horses mouth -- collected by me (as both a rider and small breeder of sport horses) for many years even before I met (and married) their maker.   Those lovely blue boxes take up a lot of space, so I haven't kept them for all the new bits, sorry about that!   If you are old enough to have been to John Dewsbury bit lectures at your riding club, you may have held some of these in your hands.  Some of them are from those display boards (which were also displayed in the James Cotterell/John Dewsbury board room); if you've been on a factory tour, you will have seen them there.  Several of them are sales demo models from the hands-on clinics and have been lightly used, and a very few have been used by family members on our personal horses/ponies -- because, yes, we are ALL riders.   These will never be made again as the moulds and patterns for them have been destroyed (despite what you may have heard to the contrary).

Postage for one of these bits to anywhere in the US  or Canada would be an additional £20, insured, tracked and signature required.  I am willing to fill out the customs declaration, however, buyer is responsible for any customs duties to be paid.  Please also note, that delivery time is unpredictable due to customs.  However, my American buyers report that they have not been charged any additional customs to date, and most have commented on the unexpectedly fast delivery....

How to identify a counterfeit John Dewsbury bit:

  1.   If a new bit is stamped on the mouth or on the rings, John Dewsbury, Kangaroo, or JD it is a counterfeit.  Genuine John Dewsbury bits were made from 1832-2007 ONLY.  However, John Dewsbury bits have not been stamped since the 1960’s -- as during product testing, we found the process of stamping our mouths and/or bit rings tends to distort them, damaging the integrity of the metal work making them more subject to breakage.

  2. If the label says that the bit was made in China, the bit is a counterfeit.  John Dewsbury bits have only EVER been made in England.

  3. If it is a new bit and the label does not state ‘lifetime guarantee’ and ‘made in England’, then it is a counterfeit bit.  Although take note, we did find some English-made counterfeits as well!

  4. Check for any dark marks on your bit which cannot be cleared with metal polish -- these are ‘occlusions’.  These are weak areas on your bit, caused by problems/faults in the metal/manufacturing process, and make your bit more subject to possible breakage!  You will not find such marks on a genuine John Dewsbury bit, but as the formula for Kangaroo metal is a trade secret (like the recipe for Coca-cola), in the counterfeit bits, occlusions are common when they attempt to make them of Kangaroo metal.

  5. ALL John Dewsbury bits are made of Kangaroo metal (or Aluminium Bronze) -- which is 70% copper.  If the labelling says 'up to 70% copper' it is a counterfeit.  ONLY John Dewsbury bits are made of Kangaroo metal, as the formula is a trade secret; it was never sold or given to ANYONE.

  6. If the bit is both new and inexpensive, it is unlikely to be a genuine product, copper is a semi-precious material, and is significantly more expensive than stainless steel, which is what most of the counterfeits are actually made of.

Over the past several months, we have had numerous reports of bits breaking – in every case, we’ve found these to be not of our manufacture, so please be careful if you have purchased one of these counterfeits.  And in the event of a breakage, please contact the person who sold you the bit!  Your bit is a safety critical item, so please, inspect your bit regularly and look for signs of wear and/or deformity, stiffness or extreme looseness in any joints, and cracks or sharpness of any edges or occlusions.  If the bit does not feel smooth and pleasant in your hand, it won’t be pleasant in your horse’s mouth, either!
