CHINAUS Postal Agency in Shanghai Two letters sent from Shanghai via the US Postal agency Reg Fitzgerald writes to his sister. He reports on his polyglot encounters and observations on his business trip through Asia in the year 1920. The letters go to Genevieve Fitzgerald, 957 Laurel Ave, St. Paul in Minnesota (the birthplace of F. Scott Fitzgerald is located in the city and even on the same street, but there is apparently no connection to him in the letters). The first letter (8 pages) was written on May 1, 1920 on board of the French mail steamer Cordillere (1896 - 1925) on the way from Singapore to Shanghai in monsoons and strong storms. This is commented on as follows: "Rough weather is always expected when missionaries are aboard. We have three French Priests + six nuns in the 2nd class, they are going to China. One of the P. has the Croix de Guerre + the M-Medal so he must've done something worth while at home." Other details are also reported, including the prices of alcoholic beverages, comments about other ships ("British cargo steamer ... the ship is bouncing around it is out of sight half of the time"), etc. Written on paper from the shipping company Messageries Maritimes, the envelope is also imprinted accordingly on the back. Stamp on cover is US Postal Agency in Shanghai 4¢ on 2¢, canceled MAY 7 "Shanghai, China/U.S. Post. Ag'cy", duplex postmark with numeral "1" in bars. The second letter (May 25, 1920, 3 pages) of the same correspondence is written on the imprinted stationery of the famous Astor House Hotel in Shanghai on a watermarked paper sheet. The writer euphorically reports about his stay in Shanghai. "I am glad to get to Shanghai again ... business is very good + lots of entertainment I don't seem to have a minute." The letter is kept short so that it can reach the S.S. China to San Francisco, which leaves the following day. Accordingly, the 2¢ stamp is canceled MAY 26 "Shanghai, China/U.S. Post. Ag'cy", duplex postmark with numeral "1" in bars.  The Postal Agency used the 2¢ stamp this time without an overprint. Overprinted stamps were meant to be paid in Chinese currency. Whenever the Chinese currency value fell below the two to one conversion rate reflected by the overprint (4¢ Chinese on 2¢ US) the overprinted stamps wehe withdrawn from sale and the amount had to be paid in US currency or equivalent. So both letters here have the same US postage rate, but different franking, reflecting changing currency rates in May 1920. This second cover bears a handwritten note "Recd 6/16/20" on the front. Both letters are authentic private letters on correspondence paper sent with no philatelic background: There are from the final period of the US postal agency in Shanghai. Amazing content, in very good condition and with only minor wear and the usual signs of opening, please see images. I am a long time member of the China Stamp Society (USA) and the Forschungsgemeinschaft China (Germany) and give full guarantee of authenticity for the stamps offered here. This applies also with regard to any postmarks given. This is a private and non-commercial sale. I am dissolving my beloved collection. Please have a look at my other items!
