Willumsen Museum - Aarhus Universitetsforlag  2016  169 p. ; 28 × 24,5 × 2,5 cm PRINTED IN DENMARK  DANSK Skagen Museum Exhibition Catalogue  22 April 2016 – 21 August 2016  Willumsen Museum Exhibition 7 September 2016 – 8 January 2017 The summer exhibition focuses on two large Nordic masterpieces by J.F. Willumsen (1863-1958) : Children Bathing at Skagen Beach from 1909 and Sun and Youth from 1910. Over a period of eight years, from 1902 to 1910, Willumsen worked at gathering inspiration and materials for executing a large painting with children and youths playing on the beach. The entire working process can be followed through his comprehensive sketch materials, where he worked with a variety of figure compositions, experimented with setting the scene of the landscape and the inclusion of different materials and techniques. At the exhibition, the two monumental masterpieces, which are both almost three metres tall and over four metres wide, will be shown next to each other. A large collection of sketch materials will also be on exhibit, of which a major part belongs to the The Victor Petersen’s Willumsen Collection at the Manor House Odden. In addition to the history of the creation of the pictures and the working process, there will also be a focus on other themes in the exhibition. Motifs and methods of painting will be analysed in an art historical context, and illustrated through the loan of significant beach pictures of other Skagen painters, such as P.S. Krøyer and Laurits Tuxen. The exhibition will also take a closer look at the motifs in a historical context with a focus on tourism and life on the beach, and finally it will highlight how the pictures influenced our view of a healthy and natural life and by extension our body ideals and our attitudes to nudity. The focal point of the exhibition In the blue wave. Willumsen and the Bathing Children is Willumsen's major work Sun and Youth from 1910, which is on loan for the exhibition by Gothenburg's Art Museum. The painting is both a major work in Danish art and within Nordic vitalism. Even so, very few Danes have actually seen the picture, as it has not been exhibited in Denmark since 1912. At J.F. The dress rehearsal for the painting – Bathing children on Skagens Strand – is found in the Willumsens Museum, a work that many perceive as the final one. At the exhibition, it will be possible to see the two paintings together for the first time. The exhibition In the wave blue. Willumsen and the bathing children present Willumsen's two monumental bathing pictures through different themes: THE WORKING PROCESS: FROM IDEA TO FINISHED WORK Here, the work's wide-ranging creation process, the artistic experiments and the development of the motif unfold. The entire work process can be followed, partly through Willumsen's letters, diary entries and photographs, partly through his extensive sketch material. Willumsen executed both small, modeled figures and in hundreds of drawn and painted sketches, where he closely studied various figure compositions, processed color, light and shadow relationships, and experimented with the landscape staging. PROLOGUE: THE ART HISTORICAL CONTEXT This theme focuses on the art historical and cultural trends by which the form and content of Willumsen's bath pictures are inspired, and examines why the reception of Sun and Youth was so reserved. This part of the exhibition includes, among other things, swimming photos of respectively P.S. Krøyer and Laurits Tuxen. WILLUMSEN'S TECHNIQUE AND USE OF COLOR The technique Willumsen used for the production of Bathing children on Skagen's Strand and Sun and youth differs markedly from his other paintings. He himself explained that the way of painting had to follow the motif, and therefore everything had to give way to consideration of the light and life force. In an almost pointillist manner, he has used short, quick brushstrokes, placed close to each other, to emphasize the dynamism and vital character of the subject. TOURISM: BEACH LIFE AND SWIMMING CULTURE The theme illuminates the relationship between Willumsen's bathing pictures and the burgeoning tourism and bathing culture of the period. It was no coincidence that Willumsen chose to go to Skagen in 1906 and again in 1909 to work with the motif of the bathing children. Partly it was here that some of Denmark's foremost representatives of the plein air painting of the 1880s and 1890s gathered, and partly Skagen around the year 1900 was transforming from a secluded fishing village far from civilization into a fashionable seaside resort. Here, the modern city dweller could relax and be cured of all kinds of mental and physical ailments, for example by taking a walk on the beach, enjoying the fresh air, sunbathing and, not least, bathing in the healing sea. THE HEALTHY AND NATURAL BODY AND OUR RELATIONSHIP TO NUDITY In Willumsen's bathing pictures, the naked, playful children and young people appear as symbols of joy in life, naturalness and harmony with nature. As a viewer, one is imperceptibly seduced by the notion of the ideal and uncorrupted way of life that the images seem to promote. Willumsen has also completely omitted any type of clothing and other objects that could help to fix the time of the motif, and thus link it to a specific period. Therefore, the viewer is confronted with the naked body of the child and young person as a cultural construction.  Amalfi / Art / Arte Danese / Artista / Artisti / Bathing Childrens / Baltic Sea / Danimarca / Danish Artist / Danish Golden Age / Danish Painter / Danish Painting / Danish Silver Age / Denmark / Grand Tour / Hammershoi / Impressionism / Impressionismo / Impressionist Painters / Impressionisti / In the wave blue / Italia / Italy / Jens Ferdinand Willumsen / Kroyer / Museum Catatalog / Naturalism / Naturalismo / Naturalist Painter / Nell'onda Blu / North Sea / Pittori Danesi / Pittori di Skagen / Plein Air / Sea / Skagen Painters / Vilhelm Hammershoi
